Although changing your car engine oil is relatively easy, most of the people are quite reluctant in performing this task.

Before you change the oil in your car engine, there are some basic things to consider such as which type of oil and oil filters to buy. However, it is important to know several other aspects before buying oil and oil filter.

Know More about Your Car

It is pertinent to know more about your car such as the make, model and year and oil type before you replace the engine oil. Most of the relevant information pertaining to your car can be obtained from your car manual. Once you have the required information about your car, you can easily choose products accordingly. There are many online stores that sell different types of car engine oils and oil filters.

Essential Tools Required

Before you change your engine oil, you require certain tools such as

  • Oil
  • Oil filter
  • Rubber gloves
  • Car jack
  • Socket wrench
  • Old towel
  • Oil drain pan
  • Paper towels
  • Funnel

Most of the cars include some type of jacks which will be ample enough to lift the cars. But before you lift your car with the jack, ensure that the oil in your car is warm. This can be done by switching the car on for a minute. Warm oil flows out easily when you drain it from the engine.

Change Your Car Oil with 3 Simple Steps

Drain the oil

As suggested earlier, heat the engine oil before draining it so that it flows out smoothly. Locate the drain plug in your car and place the oil drain pan beneath it. Use gloves as the oil might be a bit hot. You can use a socket wrench to remove the drain plug. Then let the oil flow into the pan completely. Before moving to the next step, put back the drain plug.

Replace the oil filter

Before you replace the oil filter, check your car manual for instructions and specifications. There are different types of oil filters. Remove the old filter and replace it with a new one.

Refill the oil

When you have everything sealed underneath the car, it is time to refill the oil. The amount of oil required in your car will be specified in your instruction manual. Remove the oil cap and place a funnel inside the hole. Pour oil according to the specified limit and replace the cap.

You can then remove the jacks and turn on the engine. You can then check the oil level of your car using a dipstick after turning off the engine. Your freshly oiled car is all good to go now.
